Ford has once again turned to the Bullitt moniker for a warmer version of the Mustang. In 2001, punters were given a version of the Mustang with a 265 bhp V8 and dark green paintwork, reminiscent of the Mustang driven by Steve McQueen in the film “Bullitt”. The Ford Mustang Bullitt card has been played again for the 2008 model year. In addition to the dark green paint, this latest edition also features an exhaust note tuned to the sound of the Bullitt Mustang’s engine, as Ford engineered played and replayed the “Bullitt” DVD. That almost no-one would notice and fewer would probably care was obviously not entertained. Cynical marketing moves aside, the Bullitt does feature a few changes over the standard Mustang.
For the 2008 Mustang Bullitt, Ford has found an extra 15 horses, bringing the total power to 315 bhp (235 kW) at 6000 rpm, whilst torque goes up to 325 lbft (440 Nm), achieved at 4250 rpm. Ford’s engineers have also upped the redline from 6250 rpm to 6500 rpm. 235/50 tyres now sit on 18 inch rims instead of the standard Mustang’s 17 inchers. The final drive is shortened to 3.73:1, from 3.55:1. A few cosmetic touches to further embellish the movie car connection round off the modifications. Ford claim an improved top speed of 151 mph (243 km/h) for the Bullitt.
